Himmler’s Trial
Men and women, seated upon powdery white clouds, wait patiently as the jury box fills. At the front of the courtroom, there is a high throne and all stand as a grand and indescribable spirit is seated. To look upon Him is to reach ecstasy for He is God.
Across the room a bailiff escorts a man. His black uniform and hat bear the death head symbol upon it. He is directed to a seat to the left of God.
"State your name for the court, please." The bailiff addresses the man.
"Reichsfuhrer Heindrick Himmler."
“Be seated, please. This court is now in session.”
The prosecuting attorney was tall and slender with golden hair. He rose from his seat and approached the accused to begin questioning.
"Mr. Himmler, you are here because you have perpetrated crimes against humanity. When you were caught by the British you opted to commit suicide rather than face a trial at Nurenburg. Is that correct?"
"It is."
"And was that because you were ashamed of your actions?"
"It was because I knew I would be misunderstood."
"Well, you are here now in the Highest Court to plead your case. We will listen. Go ahead."
"But the entire jury appears to be Jewish. How can I expect to receive a fair trial?"
"And so it is. It is a group of those murdered on your order at Babi Yarr. You do recall, do you not?'
"I do not."
"Then let me refresh your memory. Among many other war crimes, you were the one to decide the fate of over 33, 000 human beings. It was under your direction that these people were forced to dig a pit, lined up and systematically shot; many of them were buried alive. They were men, woman, and children of all ages. What do you say to this?"
"I say…that Jews are less than human."
“I see, Mr. Himmler. And that is why you felt that you had the right to commit these crimes; to take these lives. Here in heaven, as it should be on earth, all people are equal in the eyes of God. Were you not instrumental in the decision to annihilate the entire Jewish race? I believe you called it the Final Solution. Also, to your damnable credits, you can attribute numerous murders of Gypsies and homosexuals."
"You do not understand. These sub-humans were defiling the Aryan race. We did not enjoy the killings, it was only necessary to begin a new order."
"So, you felt that it was your right to take over God's job and decide who was fit to live and who should die? Did you really think you could do a better job than God?"
Laughter filled the court room and God smiled gently at his subjects.
"We were trying to purify the race; trying to build a Reich that would last a thousand years. It wasn't my idea, really, it was Adolph Hitler's. I was only following his orders."
"And now that you have been caught and your true character is revealed, you even turn on your best friend. Don't concern yourself with Hitler; he will have his own day in court here. But is nothing sacred to you?"
A trickle of sweat dripped down Himmler's face. The prosecutor waved his hand and a large movie screen appeared in the clouds.
"Look here, Obersfurher. Let me show you the faces of some of those whose lives were snuffed out by your hand."
Lifelike images of the faces of children wearing smiles some carrying teddy bears appeared. The screen changed and young couples stood before an altar, in their wedding clothes holding hands— so much in love. Gypsies danced beneath the moonlight, colorful skirts flying in the summer breeze, and homosexuals sat together in cafe's talking quietly. Older men and women cradled their grandchildren.
"Look, Himmler, do not turn away! These are the faces of those you have killed. But wait, Himmler there is another face. Look, closely...."
Himmler tried to turn his head but found he was not able to move. On the screen a man appeared. His hair was long and his face gentle. He wore a white robe. Kind eyes filled with wisdom looked back at Himmler from the screen.
"Do you know who that is?"
A cold chill ran across Himmler’s back as he shook his head.
"Are you sure, you don't know?"
"Yes...I am sure." He stuttered. Himmler had hardly expected to end up here on trial at the highest court.
"That is Jesus. Every time someone is killed, He is murdered once again. So, you see, you have ordered the death of Jesus many times over."
From the jury box, Jesus rose. He walked slowly to the center of the room. It was with pity that he looked at the man, his eyes devoid of any hatred.
"My son, you have sinned. But here, we have compassion and I will offer you two choices for your punishment. Far better choices, I think, than those you gave to the victims of your crimes. You can choose to be placed in a room alone with nothing more than the photos of those whom you have tortured and killed, or you can be re-incarnated and try to live a better life this time."
Himmler did not hesitate. Of course he would rather go back to earth and live again. This time he would finish the job. He would rid the world of undesirables. The Third Reich would rise again. He would find anyone born with Jewish blood and be sure to execute them.
"I choose to return."
"Very well, my son." Jesus turned to God who nodded his head.
A bright light flashed and the next thing Himmler knew he opened his eyes to find himself surrounded by men wearing yarmulkes. A rabbi and cantor sang the traditional Jewish songs at the altar. Himmler looked down to see that he, too, wore the ragged clothes of a Jew.
Himmler was re- born Jewish.
He heard the rabbi say that the year was 1933. He would be a part of the Final Solution, he realized.
"No!" His mind cried out. "Not this!" He considered suicide, but the higher court was all that waited on the other side.
Panicked, he glanced over at the man to his right and recognized the gentle eyes of Jesus, smiling at him.
